The boys are into so many fun things, these days. Yesterday, it was Mommy and Daddy's boardgames. They sat in the living room making up their own rules to Backgammon, Scrabble and Monopoly. It was truly hilarious. They decided the Backgammon pieces were money. They arranged them all on the board, then took turns rolling the dice to see how many "coins" they could pick up and put in their own cup. It was so cute to see them come up with their own system of playing! Anyway, there seems to be a checklist that needs to be met for ultimate fun. 1- Common interest: computer, puzzle, boardgame 2- Mutual agreement to do same thing at same time (amazingly, despite the fact that they can bicker over the smallest thing, they continue to adore playing together 90% of the time) 3- Pants must be removed... yes, games are WAY more fun in your underpants!!Friday, October 31, 2008
In their element

Girls' Day Out

Shea and I went to Ang's baby shower two weeks ago and had so much fun together! It's a rare occasion that my hair isn't in a ponytail, so we had to document this occasion for all posterity. :) Times like this one make me realize that we need to be making more of an effort to go out with the boys one-on-one, as well. No reason Shea should be the only one to enjoy all this attention!!Anyway, we had a lot of fun with all the gals that afternoon. Ang's mom and sis throw the most fantastic showers. Shea was happy to see her friends Audrey and Erin, too. :)

The fun of fall

I am loving how excited the boys get about projects, these days! Since fall has always been my absolute favorite time of year, it's so rewarding to be able to celebrate the season in doing relevant activities with the boys. Above are a few of our recent endeavors. The boys made beads out of homemade playclay, patiently waited a few days for them to dry (or not so patiently!), then painted them for Halloween. There have been many pumpkin-themed activities, as well as the apple prints we did after our trip to the apple orchard. Recently, we've been talking a lot about acorns, so in addition to carving their first jack-o-lantern this week-end, the boys want to go on an acorn hunt. The funniest thing ever, though, is when we sing "I'm a little acorn brown..." and Jaxon says, "Don't be an acorn, Mommy! Just be my mommy!"Thursday, October 23, 2008
Before she outgrows it...
Sure, it's wrinkled from a ride in the carseat, but I had to capture Shea in this dress before I lost another opportunity. She's growing SO fast, these days and this was the first dress she was ever given... a gift from Mimi. At the time, it seemed HUGE!! Anyway, as much as I love dressing the boys (there really are pretty cute boys clothes our there), I adore dressing Shea and she just looked too sweet in this dress. Thanks, Mom!

Another best gal pal!
How lucky is Shea? Three of my friends have had baby girls within a matter of weeks of Shea's birth! This is Sylvie, my friend Molly's little girl. Isn't she a cutie? Unfortunately, it was Shea who was refusing to smile for our little photo session, so this was the best I could do! Although Shea wanted only one thing (to eat, what else?), Sylvie was all giggles. Too cute! Won't it be fun to see these two grow up together?Monday, October 20, 2008
Lunches with Daddy
With D.R. working a long call night a week, as well as moonlighting and week-end calls, the kids and I have started meeting him for lunch on days when he might not otherwise get to see the munchkins. It's been so very fun for the boys to see their Daddy during the day. Of course, it's also been nice for D.R. and I to be together with the children at a fun locale, such as the park we met at in the following pictures. Now, if we could just find a way to continue our picnic lunches once it gets too chilly to meet outdoors!! :)

Just look at the boys' faces. Do I even need to try to explain how happy they were to be playing with their Daddy at a park? I LOVE these moments.
Daddy and Jax.
Daddy and Dex.
A rare photo of me with one of the children. Of course, Shea is sleeping!!
Love the concentration, Jaxon!! Look at that little tongue! Both boys do this when their focusing (as does D.R.). Too funny.

Changes, changes
I looked at my children today and didn't recognize a single one. The boys are suddenly long and lean. Where are their little toddler tummies? Instead of silly games of peek-a-boo, we're suddenly into jigsaw puzzles and board games. How did THAT happen? I watched them assemble a 100-piece puzzle the other day, as they gleefully sang, "I am Iron Man... da da da da da da." Today, Jaxon insisted on playing their new favorite board game, Orchard (which is awesome, by the way), over and over again. I sat quietly, watching them taking turns and explaining the rules to D.R.... and, in that instant, I felt like I had missed the past year or two of their lives. I felt guilty for all the times I counted the hours until bedtime, for all the times I didn't have patience with them when their playing got a little too loud or too rowdy, or when I felt like they would NEVER learn what the word, "No," meant. Sure, there were an equal number of days when I giggled along with them and enjoyed the noise and messes for what they were... but it went so fast. I wish I would have enjoyed more of them.
As sad as I am to see them growing so quickly, however, I have to admit that I love the fact that they continue to take such joy in life, are so excited about learning new things and can finally share their thoughts and feelings with us, even if they're somewhat silly and irrational, at times. :) As cute as the messy eating styles of toddlers can be, I love the fact that they don't rely on us to help them through meals, can clear their own place and can even help with basic kitchen clean-up. As adorable as diaper-clad children are, I am thrilled with the fact that I'm only changing a newborn's diapers!!
Anyway, I'm taking my evening of reminiscing as a reminder that I need to savor these days of sticky fingerprints with every ounce of my being. And, quite appropriately, on this day of sudden growing-up, Shea seemed to have suddenly outgrown all of her 0-3 month jammies. No longer a newborn, I have this pudgy, smiley little girl to dress in her big 3-6 month clothes. Is she going to grow up just as fast as her big brothers? :)
In closing, a few funny things the boys have said recently. While watching the boys play with some of their friends the other day, I observed one little boys grab a train out of Jax's hands. Instead of screaming or hitting, he said, so very calmly, "That's really not cool." Too funny!
To top that, Dexter actually told me to "stop freaking out," the other day. Though we had to have a conversation about what is and isn't appropriate to say to adults (and I had to quietly remind myself that I need to watch what I say, too), I have to admit, I was doing everything I could to stop from giggling. Oh, the things they say!

Shea is two months old!

I remember how quickly I thought the boys' first two months went. Shea's first two months have seemed to fly by so much faster! I feel as though I've blinked and here I am with this pudgy little cuddle bug, instead of the tiny little newborn she started out as. She still smells amazing and continues to be our dear little mellow girl. She is still a champion sleeper (yay, Shea!) and loves being held... so much so that her best naps seem to take place while she's in the Baby Bjorn. Of course, that's just fine for me, since that sort of flexibility is just what this mom of two threes really needs. Of course, my absolute favorite thing about Shea is her contagious little grin and her heart-melting coos (or, more accurately, goos). I love the way she cozies up to her big brothers when they try their best to hold her and the way she tolerates the noisy atmosphere she lives in. I love even more how happy she makes all of us. How lucky we all are to have her in this little family! Her two-months doctor's visit went really well. Of course, our pediatrician commented on how different her demeanor is from the boys' at that age. Hee hee. She was quiet and happy for all her measurements and for the entire physical exam. It was only after she got her first vaccination that she cried, poor thing. Luckily, she only needed one.
She's a bit bigger than the boys were at this age. She weighs 11 lbs 4 oz (43rd %), is 23 1/4" long (65th %) and her head circumference is 15" (16th %). Way to go, Shea!

I wish I was an apple...
A few week-ends ago, we took the kids apple picking and had such a good time. Of course, the boys thought picking apples was just about the coolest thing in the world... and we've since enjoyed apple sauce, apple crisp, apple prints with tempera paint and several other fun snacks and projects. The boys were complete pros at braving their first porta-potties and adored the pumpkin patch and playground equipment that accompanied the orchard. Here are a few pics of our little outing.

Here's Jaxon, enjoying a his reward for good picking!

Mmmm... Dex thought his reward was pretty yummy, too!

I knit these sweaters for them a few years ago... so fun to finally see them really fitting! Of course, as luck would have it, the boys would MUCH rather be wearing sweatshirts. So much for all that hard work!!!
Mommy, Jax and Shea.
Shea looks a little silly hiding under a ginormous hat... but she's in there! The sun was just so very bright that day. :)
I love this photo. The boys were so excited about coming across a pumpkin patch at the edge of the orchard. Here, Jax is trying to persuade Dex to join him.
Our little monkeys, LOVING the great new playground.
Of course, Mom, Dad and Shea were completely ready for a nap.... while the boys were more amused at the idea of pretending to nap. Hee hee.

Loving fall
We are LOVING fall. It happens to be my absolute favorite time of year and it has been made even more wonderful by seeing my bundled up munchkins crunching around in the leaves, starting to understand what these changes of season actually mean. The boys have this great fascination for leaves. We went on a leaf hunt a few weeks ago and talked all about how the leaves change color and fall from the trees. The boys attempted leaf rubbings and saved all their favorite leaf samples to be kept inside. What fun that we can enjoy activities like this together!! Of course, their all-time favorite fall activity is still running and playing outside.
Jax picks a good leaf to bring inside.
Jax, looking all cuddly..
Dex, testing the limits. I mean, technically, the sweatshirt is still on, right?
