And, you know, ultimately... that's okay with me. I know there are better ways of getting near-three-year-olds to follow directions and we have several other methods that have worked really well. If they want to stay little boys, that's just fine.
The other day at the table, thinking out-loud, I said to them, "You guys are just growing up too fast!" My little literalists started laughing and stretching their necks toward the ceiling. Ha ha.
A few weeks ago, it was all I could do to keep the boys from bouncing out the front door in the morning. Now, I find that I'm having the opposite problem. We recently started a new rule at home. If you want to take out a new toy or game, you have to put the last one away. I know it will be a work-in-progress for awhile, and there will always be exceptions to the rule (playdates, etc), but basically, the boys caught on really quickly. The one downside is that they have practically no desire to leave the apartment anymore!! Given the fact that, in all honesty, I have no desire to move these days... there are worse battles I could be fighting. That being said, I really believe that these little boys need time to run and climb. It's just this new toy rule! Now that they can only have one or two toys out at a time, their little mental list of toys they want to play with is a mile long, and they seem to be having trouble seeing beyond that.
Since this new "I no want to go outside" phase really just began a few days ago (and is usually overcome with an offer to hook up the sprinkler or go for a car-ride), I'm going to try not to push the boys. They have a tendancy to go through phases and I'll just hope this one is a short one! In the meantime, I'm enjoying a bit more time playing referee from the couch and overseeing a few more creative endeavors from the comfort of our air-conditioned interior. :)

With glue, shapes and markers... the boys were in seventh heaven!
